Effective Revision Techniques
Effective Revision Techniques Make Your Revision Pay Off with These Techniques ChaptersThe Best Revision Websites and ResourcesHow to Create an Effective Timetable for ReviewThe Importance of Sleep on Your RevisionIt would be hard to argue with the idea that every student is unique in their learning styles and study habits; even learning needs differ from one student to the next.Still, among the thousands of students who have sat school-leaving and university-qualifying exams, we can discern common threads. From study skills to memorization techniques like mnemonics and mind maps â" even those who practise procrastination and then, in a panic, resort to cramming the week before their exams are scheduledâ¦It takes all types to make a student body; that is perhaps why there is so much talk over what works best to score the highest marks on the most important exams of your life.Whether you believe you fit any particular student profile or you find yourself selecting traits from standard student portraits â" from the hard worker bound to ace their exams to the lo llygagger feeling the pinch of time.Superprof puts together an overview of the most effective exam revision techniques and materials for you to draw from.study with tutors â" especially in the more thorny subjects like GCSE science and maths. Surely, somebody has clued you in to the best places to get study materials for your exams!Probably everyone you know has an opinion of whatâs best as far as exam review is concerned; it can be exhausting taking every well-meaning direction in.Maybe that is why, every year around this time, GCSE, A-Level and International Baccalaureate candidates turn to student portals to discuss among themselves which resources are the best. There is also the small matter of adult opinions mattering far less than those of their peers that comes into play⦠Going over past exam papers, even if they consist of multiple choice questions, is one of the best ways to review for your exams Image by tjevans from PixabayThe fact remains that nearly every voice holds firm on the idea that reviewing Exam Board past papers is a sure-fire way to get the inside track on what to expect from your exams.Where can you find such papers and their marking schemes?Hereâs a word of warning: if you simply type âGCSE past papersâ in your favourite web browser, you will find a flood of sites, each trying to outdo the other in providing not only those valuable documents but also study materials meant to complement them. While the supporting utilities â" flashcards, notes and videos, if any can be helpful, overall, the vast aggregation of information is more like poking around a disorganised mound of possibly relevant information. And you really donât have a lot of time to poke around; you need well-organised, well-presented information that is easy to fin d and easy to use.Among the deficiencies these external sites suffer is a failure to show which awarding body their materials address. What if you spend months unwittingly studying AQA materials only to sit an Edexcel exam? For past papers, marking schemes and specimen papers â" samples of newly-formulated exams, it is always best to go to the source: your exam boardâs website. You can then supplement those pages with further exam preparation resources, the full extent of which are listed in our companion article. How to Create an Effective Timetable for ReviewGrade 9 students are organised. The best study techniques entail following a revision guide Image by Pexels from PixabayA most effective way to combat test anxiety â" the crushing stress of sitting exams that inevitably leads to low grades, is to set your self on a study schedule and stick to it, no matter what.Well, that last part is not exactly true; if youâve drawn up a review timetable and find yourself constantly breaking it, you should draw up a more suitable schedule. If you are preparing to sit GCSEs, you most likely picked your subjects by the end of Key Stage 3. Maybe, if your circumstances called for it, you selected them at the beginning of KS 4. Either way, youâve had roughly two years to prepare if youâre scheduled to sit exams this May/June.Establishing your revision timetable as soon as you select your subjects is far too early but if you donât have one established now, a few months before your exams, you could be in real trouble!Hereâs what you need to do to get started:Choose your metho d: a wall calendar, a computer spreadsheet or an app on your phone.Consider everything you must study: certainly you will have English, Science and Maths, as well as the subjects youâve chosen for yourself.Rank them by need: which subjects come easily and which ones are more difficult?Examine the rest of your academic and social obligations: just because you are in study mode, doesnât mean you should disregard other aspects of your life.Once you have everything in perspective, start blocking your timetable.Fill in your sleep time, school time and enough time to interact with your family and friends, and to tend to other obligations in your life. You may be dismayed to find that you only have about two hours left per day for a study session but, really, that is more than enough time to go over past exam papers and review your notes. You may, for example, spend one hour revising one of your more difficult subjects and the next one going through flash cards you made for a subject you like and are interested in.Thatâs a great way to keep your confidence up!Another fantastic way to stay confident it to draw a mind map â" a visual way of organising your information. If one aspect of the material you have just reviewed doesnât sit quite right, you might spend your eveningâs second study hour mind-mapping.A final word of advice: donât beat yourself up if, on any given day, you simply donât feel like studying. It happens to the best students; it doesnât mean youâre headed for certain exam failure. However, if the problem becomes persistent, you might want to find out how to arrange your review timetable in such a way that you will have at least one day off from studying per weekâ¦The Importance of Sleep on Your Revision Embrace good sleeping habits now so you won't feel wiped out before the exam! Image by Hebi B. from PixabayGrade 9 Students have a work-life balance. You will hear the phrase âwork-life balanceâ often once youâve entered the productive phase of your life; when you start earning your living. And, just like the adults in your life who might work long hours and have precious little free time suffer physically and emotionally, you too might find it hard to maintain a positive and healthy outlook in the run-up to your exam period.Itâs not that you need easier subjects, fewer exams or even no exams; you only need to make sure you eat a healthy balance of foods without skipping any meals and get enough sleep.Even before the life-determining exams season rolled around, UK health specialists expressed concern over how little sleep students were getting.Technology is an easy scapegoat. Between watching videos and the general âfear of missing outâ or FOMO, the teens of today are sacri ficing sleep to the latest âthingâ.Exaggeration? Maybe, but a recent independent survey that concluded teens feel significant anxiety if separated from their phones for more than a few hours seems to bear that assessment out.Whatever your reasons for getting less than eight hours of sleep, even if itâs going over exam questions and visualising academic success, is not serving you well. Quite the contrary! After a few nights of inadequate sleep, you might find it difficult to remember salient points of lecture notes; you may even find yourself re-reading your class notes without really memorizing them.If you maintain a condition of sleep deficit, not even the most foolproof exam technique will bring exam success.A critical aspect of time management in high-stress periods like the run-up to your exams is to take optimal care of yourself; sleeping well and long enough is a key ingredient of mental endurance and health.Listing all of the reasons quality and quantity of sleep matter to the various aspects of your health is a topic for another time. What you need to know right now is that sleep is so important to your revision because, among other things, it helps commit to long-term memory what youâve studied today. In fact, managing to get enough quality sleep is considered to be a part of effective study skills. Why not include getting eight hours of sleep among your study strategies? When you do, donât forget to turn your phone, tablet and/or computer off and, preferably, leave it in another room so it doesnât tempt you to take one last look at your social media feed.Who knows? You might be just the one to figure out how to break FOMO's insane grip!Throughout this article, weâve sprinkled top-rated, most-effective revision tips. As a parting shot, we give you the entire list of what Grade 9 students do to ace their exams.Good luck! Wonât you let us know how you got on?

Get to Where You Want to Be Create a Career Development Plan - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Get to Where You Want to Be Create a Career Development Plan - Introvert Whisperer Get to Where You Want to Be: Create a Career Development Plan If youâre pondering your career direction and how to get where you want to be, there are some simple steps you can take that will help you come up with a plan. Letâs not be confused by the word âsimple.â Sometimes the simplest of concepts or steps can be tough to do, because they require some thinking and some effort. Yet your thinking time and effort are an investment in your future and happiness, which make it all very worthwhile. Step 1: Figure Out Your Destination As with all efforts, you must be clear about your direction. You donât take a road trip without knowing where you want to end up. You also donât need to overly complicate this task. The following questions are helpful in thinking out your destination: Where do you want your career to be in 2 years? I like this question because this window is close enough to your current reality that itâs easy to visualize. Where do you want your career to be in 5 years? If you see that your 2-year goal is merely a step in an overall direction, then this question helps you define a longer-term goal. Sometimes itâs difficult to see that far out in time, as life and opportunities present themselves and can cause you to reset your plans. Thatâs okay, but itâs good to be looking â2 steps ahead.â What makes these targets resonant for you? Donât make a goal just for the sake of making one. You need a goal that really rings your chimes and helps motivate you into action. If youâre making a goal based on what someone else wants, it wonât be that compelling for you. Being clear on your direction means being clear that this direction is inspiring and motivational and knowing whatâs driving you to it. Step 2: Do a Gap Analysis A gap analysis is where you figure out the differences in the qualifications between where you are right now and your 2-year goal or next step. Using a job posting or job description for the position youâre aiming at is a good way to get specific information about the skills and experience that are expected. Itâs good to look at more than one job description (perhaps one with your company and one with a competitor) in order to ensure you arenât missing any key items during your analysis. Go through the job description line item by line item and rate your current state of skills, education or experience against whatâs listed. Your rating system can be as simple as 1-10, with 10 being a perfect match and 1 being completely missing. As you rate, make notes about your thinking for future reference. Once youâve completed this exercise, identify all of the items where you need anywhere from a fair amount to a substantial amount of development. Look for commonalities and clump those together as a category. Youâll discover that there will be themes to your gaps. Also, donât get too compulsive about where you think youâre not a perfect match, but you have fairly developed skills. If these skills are mostly present, they will make you a competitive candidate and shouldnât require too much development attention. You now have a list of development items. Step 3: Create Your Development Plan You are now fully armed with a clear 2-year goal and all the details of where and what you need to develop to get you where you want to go. Your plan will be its best if you can consult with your boss and/or mentor to help you with ideas for how to get the skills you need to add. Some key things to keep in mind: There may need to be some logical order to a few of the items on your list. Sometimes you need to do X before you can do Y. Make these among the highest-priority items so you can accomplish these things and move on to others. There are often multiple ways of accumulating needed skills. You may also want to have multiple ways of beefing up your skill set to add depth to it. An example is if you want to move to a project management position; you may want to get certification and also to ask for project responsibilities. Initially, these may be small, which is fine they will give you an opportunity to grow and learn. You may need to research various ways to get the skills you need. Once done, this will give you ideas of how you can approach these items. You need dates. You need to keep yourself accountable to your plan, and the best way to do that is to give yourself a âstart byâ date. You canât predict how long it will take or how much work you will have to do in order to develop the skill at the level you need, but you do have control over the action you take to get started. Keep track. You need to pay attention to your plan a minimum of twice per year. This will allow you to stay focused on your progress and remind you of next steps. Career development is the sort of thing you can easily forget about until you wake up one day to realize youâve gone nowhere and arenât having fun. You are responsible for where you go in your career. (Like this thought? Tweet it!) With a little bit of planning, you can accomplish great things. Your Secret Power will Influence others
Introvert Whisperer / Your Secret Power will Influence others How to Use Your Secret Power to Influence Others at Work Check out our video on Office Politics I think by this point we all know Introvertâs tendency toward quiet. Susan Cain titled her book on Introverts that way. Yes, we can clam up in meetings and cocktail parties, which may or may not help our climb up the ladder. We donât like to schmooze as small talk can be annoying and without purpose. Creating relationships in an ocean of people isnât something we like to do. That gets us to what we do like to do and one of those is definitely the Secret Power of Introverts. Wait and look around to make sure no one is reading over your shoulder so we can keep this a secret. Secret: We prefer to build relationships one-on-one in a more intimate setting. You might ask why this is a secret power. Glad you asked. You build influence with others when you get to know them. You can get more details about what is important to others when in a safer, more intimate setting. When you know what is important to others you can be more supportive which builds influence. Save it say, when anyone is in a group setting, the interactions are superficial at best, which is not a great way to get to know someone. Advice like âwork the roomâ completely misses the point in relationship building. In order to really get to know someone you have to focus on one person. Your best opportunities and support come from people who know, like and trust you.

Where to find honest reviews for online English teaching companies
Where to find honest reviews for online English teaching companies If youâve spent any time at all researching online English teaching jobs, you will be alarmed at how fake some of these sites look. Itâs not uncommon for a stock image of a man in headphones to take up 90% of the screen and for the other 10% of the screen to be occupied by Chinese characters. Thereâs really nothing more disconcerting than having to google translate job requirements for an online English teaching position. Often, websites for these online teaching companies offer scant information about the position. And when there is information, itâs generally just a list of qualifications/requirements for candidates. To find out anything at all about the actual job, youâre expected to send an email to what may look like a spammy email address. And even when the email address seems professional, it may feel like a headache to actually get in touch with these folk, only to find out it will be a 2 hour per week contract paying you $8 in total. Our advice is not to let bad web design, a lack of details or poor translation put you off. There are other places you can go to find out all the information you need to make the decision. The internet is home to a literal army of online English teachers in the exact same position. They are continually posting reviews, recommendations and advice for teachers in the same boat. All youâve got to do is know where to look. Youâd be surprised at how many of these dodgy-looking sites are actually legit. Like other careers, there are no shortcuts when it comes to a proper job hunt. Youâre going to have to commit a few hours to figuring out whatâs what in the online English teaching universe and reading up on the various online English teaching companies. Thereâs no easy way around it and to skip this step might land you locked into a contract with poor conditions and missed pay slips. This shouldnât be the case, if you do your research, thereâs no reason why online teaching wonât be as convenient and lucrative as it sounds. The best places to find trustworthy online ESL teaching reviews 1. Glassdoor Not all the online teaching companies will have reviews listed here (in fact, not many will have a presence on this site), but itâs generally a good place to start your search. They typically have detailed reviews as the process requires users to answer specific questions. 2. Google is your BAE The online English teaching companies should be all over Google, so itâs worth doing a thorough search on them. This will throw all sorts of listings and we recommend looking further than just page one. Tabs are there for a reason, so use them. If you take anything away from this blog post, itâs this: search, sigh, and then, search again. 3. REDDIT Online teachers are on the tech-savvy end of things and thereâs only one place that all tech types seek information. Reddit might seem like a monster, but itâs chock-full of teachers answering questions about various online teaching companies, including VIPKID. There are subreddits that will answer your every concern. The internet is a helpful place, so use it. We recommend checking out the subreddit dedicated to online TEFL teachers. 3. Quora This is better than any review site. Chances are any company youâre wondering about has already been mentioned in the numerous questions posted by online TEFL teachers every day. But if you donât feel like trawling through other peopleâs queries, why not post your own question. Quora will let you do it on a specific thread and select people to ask the question to. Just searching âteach English online companiesâ will throw up questions and answers that might already offer plenty of honest feedback about the companies youâre wondering about. 4. Facebook groups If you really want the honest truth about an online ESL company - avoid their company Facebook and jump straight to one of these groups. Youâll bypass all the nonsense. There will be more than enough people willing to give you their opinions about companies and conditions. We recommend the following: Hired online teachers with job reviews, Teach ESL online Online English teachers These are all full of teachers chatting about their positions. Now, I know what youâre thinking - anyone can write reviews on the internet and employees are probably penning odes to their own companies. But itâs pretty easy to spot a fake review and there are as many honest ones out there. So before I tell you where to search for reviews, Iâm going to show you how to spot the fake ones peppering those very same pages. Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. How to spot a fake teaching English online job review Someone writing a fake review often seems vague They will list benefits and not go into much detail. This is because itâs hard to say much about something you havenât actually experienced. Honest reviews for online teaching jobs usually focus on the details of the role because theyâve been in your shoes and know what people looking at reviews need to know. Honest reviewers tend to be specific about their own experiences and qualifications as well as giving thorough examples of working with the company. It sounds weirdly sales-y Use your common sense, the minute you feel like youâre being sold the online job, back right up and have another google. Itâs not to say that a fake review is lying, just that what you want is a little more insight than a sales pitch. Itâs all about the reviewer The more you see the words âIâ and âmeâ the warier you should be. Psychologists have found that when people are lying - they tend to try and make their experiences seem more personal. A real reviewer will mention themselves, but perhaps in passing, their review will most likely focus on the role and company. The same review is cross-published on numerous sites This one is easy to spot, and if you see the exact same answers cropping up over and over⦠with the same wording, then itâs probably a copy and paste hack-job. Verbs versus nouns Honest people tend to have some cold-hard facts and their reviews will be full of nouns, so do a little count. Fake reviews are heavy on the verbs as they try to get you to believe their drastic sounding stories. Check the timestamps on reviews If all the good reviews are written at pretty much the same time⦠be warned! Iâm sure thereâs some universe where every online teacher logs on at the same time feeling like passionately sharing the positives of the company they work forâ¦but weâre not in that universe. Generally speaking, real reviews will be spaced out. A concentration of reviews for a particular company during office working hours on one particular day in June of 2018 might be a good reason to get suspicious. Review the reviewer ???? Most honest reviewers come with a profile attached. Have a noseyâ¦do they answer similar questions on the site and are the answers genuinely helpful. If itâs on a social network, itâs easy to see if theyâre a real person and you can double check LinkedIn to make sure theyâve actually been a teacher. Not everyone has a big online footprint, but itâs not hard to find out a little bit more about the person writing it if you take a minute to look. The review is sloppy People being paid to post fake reviews arenât paid a lot and usually per review. This means their reviews can leave a lot to be desired and if youâre seeing terrible punctuation, poor spelling and just plain bad English...well ask yourself this - is this person really an English teacher? I donât know any English teacher worth their salt that would leave a trail of typos in their wake!

Online Tutoring Background and Definitions
Online Tutoring Background and Definitions Online tutoring is a form of education which implies that the interaction between a tutor and a student is realised by means of Internet. It is practiced using variable learning methods and is addressed to distinct groups of users. Present-day networked environment offers numerous tools which allow to make online learning as efficient as conventional educational approach and even make it peerlessly more comfortable and beneficial in comparison with the face-to-face lessons. The most primitive variant of the online tutoring can be an exchange of messages containing educational instructions, tasks and answers via e-mail or any instant messaging computer program. More advanced methods include using headsets or web-cameras and multimedia programs which allow to maintain audio and video contact and to involve into session as many participants as necessary. The tutoring may take the form of many-to-one tutoring when several students simultaneously log in and receive instructions from a single tutor. Another variant is peer tutoring which means that students tutor each other within specific subject and this can also be implemented by use of online conferencing interface. However the most general form is the one-on-one tutoring when individual learners or their parents purchase online tutoring time from a private tutor. Origin of Online Tutoring The idea of learning without tutor and tutee meeting face-to face was born long time ago. Although the organised distance education sprang up only in 18th-19th centuries but exchange of letters on tutoring purposes can be as ancient as a skill of writing itself. The first mentioning of distance education was found in the issue of Boston Gazette of 20th March 1728 in which âCaleb Phillips, Teacher of the new method of Short Handâ declared that âPersons in the Country desirous to Learn this Art, may by having the several Lessons sent Weekly to them, be as perfectly instructed as those that live in Boston.â Another early reference on distance education was in Swedish university newspaper Lunds Weckoblad No. 30 of 1833, the advertiser offered the opportunity to study âComposition through the medium of the Postâ. The first American system of study via correspondence was founded by Anna Eliot Tickner, daughter of a Harvard University professor, who established the Boston-based Society to Encourage Study at Home in 1873. The arrival of the computers has opened up new opportunities for many industries including education. In 1960s the first experiments on using computers for studying math and reading with children were run by Stanford University professors Patrick Suppes and Richard C. Atkinson. Their researches created the foundation for Stanfords Education Program for Gifted Youth. With time the complete systems based on Computer-Learning were developed and in 1993 a project providing an online computer-delivered lecture, tutorial and assessment using electronic mail was worked out by William D. Graziade. Further achievements in Internet and multimedia technologies gave a compelling impulse for development of the online tutoring all over the world. By the middle of 1990th first virtual schools already appeared in USA and Canada. For example in 1996 Virtual High School in Ontario offered two online-classes in biology and Canadian literature. In 1997 the countrys first state-wide Internet-based public high school was founded in Florida (Florida Virtual School) and in the 2010-11 school year it served more than 122,000 students. Online schools exist all over the world now but they are particularly popular in the United States. Some of them are even integrated into public schools and the students can study online sitting in the computer classes of the usual school. Sometimes education can be completely homeschooled or can combine elements of public/private face-to-face studies and online classes. The distance education which evolved into online tutoring in our days has a long history and it is based on an experience of several generations of tutors who applied and tested the remote approach to education on numerous ancestors of the modern students. We at Tutorz.com fully realize all benefits and prospects of the online education. Implementing the online tutoring referral at our web-site is our primary task at the moment and we will do our best to provide our highly esteemed users with this service in the nearest future.
